Reader Reviews:fine wit, but an unnecessary elitist bias (0/2 people found this helpful)This book is both meant to be an autobiography of Churchill's private secretary and to be the tale of Churchill's last years. The book written by a man who spent a considerable amount of time with Churchill comes across as a bit of an anachronism. The style is totally upper class British, which can sometimes be a delight, but when coupled with the author's tendency to denigrate anything not British and to castigate all those with views contrary to his great idols' it is on the whole very trying. To be sure there are plenty of delightful Churchillian quotes and anectdotes in the book which is why I give it two stars, but on the whole it comes across as a somewhat desperate cry of a man who above all else in the world would like us all to bow our heads in the direction of Britain, especially towards Britain as it was more than a hundred years ago when a few bright young men from impeccable families ruled the world. Churchill was a truly inspiring figure, but his prime was 60 years ago. In the book he is often quoted as saying "I was not always wrong". Today luckily we can say that at least as what concerns other races' ability to rule themselves, he wasn't always right either. CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
