A selection of love poems (or songs) from the Man'Yoshu, a millennium-old anthology of Japanese poems (4500 all together); this slim but gorgeous book selects 30-odd of these brief poems and presents them in Japanese and English, along with informed commentary. Most importantly, however, each poem is accompanied by a fantastic work of art - sensual, erotic, intricate - which neatly encapsualtes the spirit of the poem. It is the art which is the star of this book, bringing a world of past love to rich life. Expensive, but thorougly worthwhile.
