Truely inspirational (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is the best book I have read in many years. It touched my heart so very much. I could not put the book down. Every page is gripping. When you read a book like this and to find that the author has succefully come out the other side and has gone on to successfully raise three children, it makes you realise there is hope in the world.
PLEASE MARTHA LONG, write another book. We must hve a continuation

Couldn't Put it Down! (0/0 people found this helpful)

An excellent read - very upsetting but also inspiring - Martha's tale is extroadinarily evocative of a time and place....and her wit and courage is truly humbling. Like others have said, I would love to know what happens later on - lets have a sequal soon!

Heart stopping, heart sinking and full of hope. (0/0 people found this helpful)

So many of these memoirs that I have read border on an almost tedious predictability. However poor Martha's wretched start in life is so frightening and yet filled with humour that leaves you laughing and crying at the same time.

Her mother's frustratingly constant weakness is juxtaposed with Martha's strength leaving me with the notion that both mother and menacing step-father were 'touched in the head' and that the whole family would possibly have starved to death if it hadn't been for Martha's 'shopping trips'!

I spent time in the Regina Coeli when I was ten in the late 70s, and thankfully that particular 'institution/charity' had moved on a wee bit since Martha's childhood, however I could still very easily relate to her flowing descriptions of the shame felt in the eye's of Irelands Catholic instutional disgust of poverty and yet she doesn't dwell here, but goes to pains to point out the kidness shown by those few in positions to help.

A brilliant refreshing way to look and laugh at misery, thanks Martha.
