Look elsewere (1/1 people found this helpful)

I bought this book because I quite like the ForDummies Series but if you are new to MAC (and/or moved from Windows) you're better off buying the D. Pogue's Missing Manual for MacOSX, better still, with the arrival (in October ?) of Leopard you better save money now and get an update version of the book.

Complex but not comprehensive (7/7 people found this helpful)

This large volume seems ill at ease with itself, not least because the author's humour struggles to engage the reader. It describes itself as seven books in one, referring to different facets of the Tiger system. Certainly Mr Chambers knows a lot about his topics, but he isn't altogether skilled at communicating his expertise or realising what the reader might REALLY want to know.

Despite the declaration that enquiries are welcome via the website, the latter is not navigable with ease, and when I finally managed to submit a query, no response was forthcoming. I obtained this book from my local library; I BOUGHT a far better book from Amazon, which contained the answer to my question. Chambers with DUMMIES is certainly an improvement on the simple introductions to OS X.4, but it's not the best option

Buy the OS X Bible instead (28/29 people found this helpful)

Buyers of the Dummy books buy them for a reason: they don't know much about whatever the book is about.

Doubtless Mr Chambers knows his stuff, and knows it well. Sadly, therein lies the problem. In him ensuring you know that he does, he fails to impart much of it to the reader at this level, who is buying the Dummies book for that reason. Nothing about font storage (a fundamental on any computer) or Font Book, yet pages devoted to Unix codes. Appropriate for 'dummies'?

Perhaps it IS me (I bought the Dummies book because I know nothing), despite that, I found the OS X Tiger Bible a much better buy to say nothing of value.
