Astonishingly dumb. I usually like "For Dummies" books, but this is ground-breakingly dumb. (0/0 people found this helpful)

The book is written from exactly the wrong end - the author has started with the menus and icons visible to you, and tells you what they do. Often this is as mindless as showing you a picture of the menu that will come up if you press a particular button. Good computer books are organised the other way around - they start from what you want to do, and tell you how to get there.
Did you need to know that the Calculator application is for Maths? This book is for you! Did you need to know that the Back button will take you back one step? Did you need to know that the command "Empty the Trash" deletes the files in the Trash folder? This book is for you! Did you need to know how to browse the internet securely? This book can't help you. (The complete failure of the book to mention Firewalls is just one illustration of the author's total failure to include any information that would be of any use.) Possibly, if you've never used a computer of any type before, you might be glad you bought this book, but even then you'd need another book by the end of the week.

Great help even for a refugee from the PC (14/14 people found this helpful)

This is an excellent guide to OS X. I have not used a Mac since 1990 and just switched this year (2006) after using mainly PCs since the 80s. Of course there were quite a few hurdles to overcome (where is the right-button??), but Bob really has produced a great introduction that is easy to follow and does not send the reader to sleep. The chapters are bite-sized, because none of us want to read a book before using the Mac - with this you can skip through another chapter and pick up a few more nuggets very quickly. Now I'm far more comfortable with the Mac OS X than I ever was with Windows and it's all thanks to this book.
