Reader Reviews:Macedonian complexities (3/3 people found this helpful)Macedonia was the poor, southern partner in the former Yugoslavia, something reflected in the paucity of material written about it in English. So for anyone interested in the complexities of Balkan politics, this book makes a fascinating and welcome read.During the 1990s, it looked as though Macedonia might escape the bitter inter-ethnic wars which ravaged its former Yugoslav partners, but in 2001, it hit the headlines as it teetered perilously on the brink of civil war. This book, written by a journalist who covered the conflict from the frontline, goes a long way to explaining the complicated domestic politics of Macedonia which fed the flames of the hostilities, as well as placing Macedonia in the wider Balkan context. It captures both the horrors and sometimes the absurdities of conflict between neighbours, as well as giving the reader a sense of the fast moving events of that summer of 2001 when Macedonia seem to be heading for disaster.
