Reader Reviews:Definitely recommended. (0/0 people found this helpful)I bought this book back in 2003, when I was doing a lot of flash and it quickly became one of my favourite books - along with Colin Moock's actionscript reference. Some books you just click with and this was one of those books for me. Now I'm an undergraduate in AI and I still find it useful. As an introduction to "search", the section on A-star, together with the working example files, explains the algorithm better than some of the AI texts I've read! (Although I wouldn't recommend it as a substitute AI course book!) This book is well structured, clear and methodical and works well as a reference or a course in games programming. The chapters give you a good idea of the method and strategies available, as well as tips and tricks, not to mention good bits of code you can plunder for your own games. I don't know what the 2004 version of the book is like, but if I ever get back in to flash, I'll probably buy it. This book talks to you.. (7/7 people found this helpful)..having bought an assortment of books to get me started and then progress my knowledge i truely say that few have inspired me so much as this book. I felt the author talks you through everything, NOT waffles on about the subject and expects you to pick it up here and there from what is written. Jobe, and the other contributors (respected flash designers), explain and then reinforce the material they are trying to convey. I have read the SAMS book on flash and done the hours/days etc but they didn't click as much as this book...and this is rated as for medium to advanced users. The maths section took me right back to my school days, but he hasn't made it geeky. If you want to know how the games are made, this book lifts the cover off the engine block to show the gears moving and how they move. I thought i 'knew' about animation, well the SAMS way of thinking. Now my eyes are opened. Buy it today and learn what Flash is really about. the best flash book ever (4/4 people found this helpful)i have just built my first isometric game with the help of this book and of all the flash books i have used so far, this is clearly the best one. the explanations are great and it helps you understand what you are doing rather than just copy and paste the code. highly recommended! A game-specific book for intermediate level scripters (17/18 people found this helpful)This book provides extensive knowledge of how to create a game in FlashMX. The book assumes a beginner/intermediate knowledge of ActionScript so it may be a bit too much for the complete novice. The book will explicity give code concepts and different ways of doing things like how to simulate gravity. If you've a knack for ActionScripting, this book will help you to further understand new concepts specific to gaming like collision detection, physics, a.i. and multi-user code-specific concepts. The best way to learn how to create your own game from scratch is to learn these specific concepts as 'building blocks'. If you can't decide which book to get on Flash game design, i'd recommend this one providing you have prior knowledge of Visual Basic and/or JavaScript and already know most programming concepts. It is NOT for the complete ActionScript beginner i.e. no previous programming knowledge or experience. This book is aimed at programmers with existing knowledge of ActionScript or any similar languages as mentioned above. Truly Amazing (4/8 people found this helpful)If you are interested in flash and/or computer gaming, then this is the book for you, it includes detailed explanations on how to create vector based games for fast and easy loading and all bandwiths. It is exceptionally hard to explain how amazing this book is! i have been interested in the internet for years now and now i practise making web pages nearly every day and this book helps an awful lot! my advice BUY IT NOW!
