A bible to carry everywhere!! (13/14 people found this helpful)

I can't praise this book enough!!! Anyone who is starting out or even made their first short should carry this book with them. Levy teaches not only in very clear manner but also with a very hands on approach to filmmaking, he makes you think about what your doing and how you would go about doing it. Alot of books tell you as a writer/director to just get out there and shoot, shoot anything, but Levy points out that that's great but you won't advance your techniques if you do. It takes time and effort to write and direct succesfully and he advises to not go out there till you are sure everything is in place and you are happy with what your doing. 5* plus!!

Not short shrift (25/33 people found this helpful)

Okay, so you've heard it all before: the step by step guide to filmmaking, the technicalities involved and the basics to ensure that no one is at a loss. Yet will any of us ever make a movie, be it short or long? With this book at least you have a shot at it. After all with the technology available now there is less chance of saying maybe than saying 'yes'. Since he is a screenwriting teacher Levy gives us the low down on many aspects of the film making world we are curious about. If you are wondering about actors, he puts you straight, concerns over screenplay format he sorts it, direction sussed and postproduction organized. He even gives us a few examples of work completed to show us the way through the darkened tunnel of film. You could do worse if you want to create a short.
