Totally unnecessary LP guide (8/16 people found this helpful)

I wonder where LP will set its own limit on the destinations they cover. Being excellent and nr.1 in guidebooks of unexplored, less known or not well organized places, they also have written books about places like Malta (and The Canary Islands) where one can go easy on your own without a guidebook like this one.
About Malta there are numerous guidebooks with detailled descriptions of the places, and that is what people ever need to visit Malta. Most people will be there in some sort of package tour already anyway. Once there the locals speak english and the island is so well organized you do not need a LP to find out what to do, how to get around etc. The tourist office is also extremely well providing brochures, maps of everything you need before and during your stay.
Do buy an LP when travelling to Asia, Africa or European countries like Romania or Ukraine, but Malta???
Would you buy a LP if they decide to write one about Eurodisney in Paris or Benidorm?

Reasonable but long winded (11/13 people found this helpful)

This guide gives you an excellent read on the history and culture of Malta and Gozo.

But I personally found it a bit long winded and short on easy to access practical information, for quick access to on the move.

Another fine Lonely Planet offering (24/24 people found this helpful)

I bought this for a recent trip to Malta, and once again have been impressed by the quality and content of the Lonely Planet guide for the area. Although Malta doesn’t have a huge amount to offer, this guide details all you could want to know from history, geography, sites, where to stay, scuba diving and general travel advice.

That said I was also encouraged that the book doesn’t try to oversell the sites which really irritates me in many travel guides. Some of the advice about which things to do and which not to do are absolutely spot on, particularly re which catacombs to visit in Rabat. One place I really recommend going to is Marsaxlokk a small fishing village in the south-east corner of the island.

The maps are actually a bit poor and I would recommend getting something extra if you plan on driving around but as a guide, this one’s superb!
