Wonderful book - no fishies though... (10/10 people found this helpful)

This is a carefully researched and beautifully produced work, with colourful photos of each species and detailed descriptions of their lives and habits. It even has a brief section on seabirds, for the diver who is interested in what he/she sees above water as well as below.

However, it is not made clear on Amazon that the book covers all aspects of Maldivian marine life EXCEPT the actual fish and sharks! I was hoping for a single book to take with me on my holiday. I would still highly recommend this book as a reference guide to everything else, but thought I should write this review to ensure no-one else makes the same mistake. Buy a fish identification book as well and you will be able to identify absolutely anything the Maldives throws at you!

I have a large collection of fish books but Coleman's book on Maldives is something new. Clearly set out and divided into sections on marine plants, sponges, cnidarians, worms, molluscs, crustacea etc etc it is beautifully illustrated with colour photos. Although aimed at Maldives I find a lot of the pictures relevant to other areas of the Indian Ocean. Each section has a clear and well written introduction explaining what the animals do and how they live, and for the diver interested in things other than just fish this is indispensible!
