Reader Reviews:

5/5 stars

An excellent reference and text book (0/0 people found this helpful)

This book is a true language user's guide, it does not tell the reader how to approach problems and structure code; so if you are very new to programming then this book is not you for you (yet). That said it does introduce the VB Express programming environment and explains how to get the best from the tools. It introduces VB Express in a very simple and clear way with each item building on what has been previously explained. It is also very accessible as a reference manual with a well structured table of contents and index. The downloadable code examples are easy to follow and allow the user to quickly develop their own simple working applications. As someone who is used to writing VB under Excel the books references to these other versions of VB have been invaluable and has helped smoothed my transition.

One of the BEST Visual Basic 2005 books! (4/4 people found this helpful)

At around 720 pages long, this book is much thicker than a lot of beginners books on Visual Basic 2005 (The included CD comes with Express edition making it value for money). It is very well written, and with patience, you should be amazed at how much you can learn from one book. It covers a lot of areas, some to be attempted, only after you learn the basics.
The one downside to the book is that it seems that the authors only had access to the beta version of the program, not the finished article. This is evident in some of the screenshots, and leads to a few minor errors. However with the Help option, these errors can be overcome.
In summary, if your interested in a Visual Basic 2005 (Express edition) book, put this at the top of your list. Its a book that you can use as a beginner, and carry on using as you become an expert.

Technical Authors Can't Deliver Concepts. (3/3 people found this helpful)

Getting over the Concepts involved in understanding a programming language like VB.NET is one of the biggest tasks facing a technical author. This book steps through everything in a logical manner but like many similar books before, it fails to start each concept at the beginning with a simple overview and a good example. I would suggest that after the author wrote this book that he gave a draft copy to a member of the target audience and asked the question, "Ask me anything that you don't understand with this book ?". Within days of buying this book I am looking for a better one..but it's an uphill struggle, I will probably not find what I'm looking for.

I'm sure that Technical Authors are very knowledable but the bottom line is...they don't know how to write books that achieve the goal of getting the concepts over. They assume that you already know !

Excellent primer, with genuinely useful programs. (14/14 people found this helpful)

One thing that sets this book apart is that the programming examples are genuinely useful. Unlike some of the simpler books, they will have practical application with little or no modification.

There are programs (or "methods", to use the modern vernacular) to manipulate images including the adjustment of sharpness, softness, etc. These are explained so well they appear amazingly simple.

The full power of the .NET Framework is uncovered. The author has pulled off a marvellous trick: a beginner's book that reaches into the advanced sphere of programming.

I spent a couple of hours in a bookshop perusing the full range of titles covering the new VB.NET 2005 and this one stood out from all the others. My first impressions have been vindicated by the enjoyment and edification I have received from this book.

Unlike some beginners' books this one doesn't patronise. You will not finish it and discard it in a week; you'll be using it for reference even when you've learned the language.

I'm an amateur programmer who has read many books on many subjects. I would rank this with the very best.
