I listened to the unabridged version of Matter (available from Audible), but whether abridged or unabridged Toby Longworth's interpretation is truly excellent, bringing the text to life with both humour or gravitas employed when required with appropriate sensitivity. Some have been critical of Matter however I found it to be well up to the standard of previous Culture novels and I was truly sad when I had finished it. What I like most about Iain M Bank's novels is the sheer breadth of imagination and ingenuity, never stale, always some surprise or new idea or concept on the next page. My only concern is that it is at least another two years wait until the next one....Banks will have to start writing faster!

All of Ian Banks science fiction is top notch. Some novels are better then others. My favourites are the culture books. Now this Audio version of the book is about the Culture, but its not's the central theme here. Unless I am mistaken!
It's a `quirky tale' and I, say quirky, because it's an abridged version of the novel. I really wish the powers that be, would do full audio version of his science fiction novels. It's well read with full characterisations done very well by the reader. As far as I am concerned it's worth 5 stars, but it's abridged hence a very reluctant 4 stars.

Warning... the picture at the top clearly states that this is the unabridged version of the book, but having bought it I can confirm that it is abridged on 5 CDs. I haven't listened to it yet, so i can't review the book, but I thought other buyers should be informed.
