Helpful but the exam is still a lot of work (1/1 people found this helpful)
I have 3 years experience on SQL Server 2000 as a developer. I studied using this book for almost 7 months and played around with the free trial version of SQL Server 2005, doing all the practical exercises in the book.
The book is helpful but the exam is a tough one - expect to read and re-read the book and do all the exercises a few times before being ready.
Some of the topics are explained at great length and some are skimmed over, and the author doesnt do much to break down some dull and dusty topics but these are minor complaints really.
Given that this is a third party book it is disappointing that the tone is so "pro-Microsoft". I would have liked some advice of the practical problems of implementing some of the more hyped features e.g Service Broker. The entire book only contains one criticism which is that you need a SQL Server to act as a mirroring witness (which is ridiculous but you can use Express). It would be good to have some hard-won advice from the "coding floor" on how valuable some things new in 2005 actually are.
Having said that the book does what it is supposed to do - helps you pass the exam.
Had I done it without the book I would have failed my you know what off
as it was I passed comfortably.
Be warned - the exam contains practical exercises so you need hands-on experience from somewhere either work or the exercises in the book. Microsoft will supply a 6 month trial DVD of SQL Server 2005 which is enough time to practice for the exam.
