Editorial Review:From Bollinger and Krug to lesser-known sparkling wines from South Africa and the United States, Tom Stevenson describes the history of the vineyards, the grapes and the wines from various countries in his easy-to-use, A-Z listing, The Millennium Champagne & Sparkling Wine Guide. Stevenson, who wrote Sotheby's Champagne in 1996, is one of the world's foremost experts on bubbly. In this book he describes more than 900 individual wines, which he ranks and analyses over 64 full-colour pages. Notes on chilling, opening, storing and pouring are included. A good glossary explains everything from acidity to Vin de taille and there's also a listing of the major stockists of Champagnes and sparkling wines in Britain. Interesting anecdotes and quotes abound. When asked how she enjoyed a glass of Bolly, Lily Bollinger (1899-1977) once said: "I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it when I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it--unless I'm thirsty of course." Reader Reviews:A great pocket sized guide (0/0 people found this helpful)I agree with the other reviewer: if you have the money and only want one guide to fizz get the full Champagne & Sparkling Wine book by the same author BUT it is worth getting this book aswell because this guide gives a score out of 100 for every wine mentioned and often several different vintages - useful if you want to know if the 1990 is better than the 1992 for example. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that It doesn't cover every champagne available in Britain. A brilliant book none the less. Good catalogue of 900 selected wine, but ... (0/0 people found this helpful)This is an interesting little book, describing sparkling wine and champagne -- how its made, some of the Champagne grande marques, and about sparkling wine in other countries (including England and Wales). The main part is the catalogue of 900 or so wines, chosen by their score out of 100. Quite comprehensive, and includes quite a few of the English sparklers. However, looking at it, I think perhaps if you have the money, you should buy the larger Encyclopedia (by the same author), which looks more comprehensive. But still a good little book.
