I found 'Modern Persian: Complete Course' to be an excellent first book for learning Persian. It has effectively taught me to read and write in only a few short months. The grammar portions are invaluable as a framework for understanding the language, although at times uses concepts which have yet to be explained.

This book should not be used alone unless you only have a passing interest in the basics of the Persian language. It briefly mentions the colloquial pronunciations which are widely used among most Persian speakers, which in turn makes effective communication difficult with native Persian speakers. The book also fails to bring to light many of the differences in phraseology between the English and Persian languages.

Overall, it does a decent job of introducing one to the Persian language, but don't buy this book alone, I would recommend obtaining another book as a companion which would allow you to learn to speak conversationally.

Whilst I am finding this book to be helpful in learning vocabulary and grammar, its big downfall is the poor quality of the Farsi script used. Clarity has been sacrificed in an attempt to teach handwriting -- at times I have despaired of deciphering the letters and even native Iranians have struggled to read the often blurred characters.

When I went to Iran and needed to learn Farsi rapidly I found this book perfect. The methods it uses are easy to follow and it teaches both the writing and speech. I was able to to check its content immediately by using it with native speakers and found it highly accurate.
