Name to a Face - Robert Goddard (2/3 people found this helpful)

I found this disappointing and must admit I found myself speed reading the last few chapters. The characters have no depth to them which prevents you from connecting with them and as events unfold it all becomes totally fanciful.
However, on the plus side, the historical element is interesting, Goddard's choice of language fits with the characters and he uses a clever technique of cliff hangers at the end of chapters which urges the reader on and keeps the pace fast and flowing.

Overall, the story line is lacking the usual Goddard well-drawn characters and intrigue that the dust jacket praise promises.

Very disappointing (1/2 people found this helpful)

This felt like he had been on holiday very recently to each of the locations in the book, and decided to link them together into a very poor story. I lost the focus of the plot halfway through, and didn't care one jot about any of the characters. However, it made me read "Take no farewell" again which has a wonderful, compelling, tight plot which makes one want to carry on reading.

A poor effort (2/3 people found this helpful)

I have to agree with the majority of reviews here. Having read all of Goddard's novels, particularly the early ones, I was dissapointed but not surprised that it simply ran out of steam half way through. The previous 2 or 3 novels had not in my view done this, but this is back to Sea Change territory. I simply lost all interest and did not care what happened, skimming through the last 150 pages.

Great!! (1/1 people found this helpful)

There are two types of Goddard books -and I've read them all - either set in an historical time or (usually) set in the present with historical events playing the leading role. I prefer the latter. This is a wonderful, haunting, twisting and turning tale set in Cornwall with events dating back 30 years playing the historical murder link. Full of the usual red herrings, dead ends and pathelogical lying it's a fast fun read. Often Goddard has a first half, second half disparity in quality, as some reviewers have noted. Maybe it's true or maybe, like the Sopranos, you wish it wasn't going to end and when it does you feel a bit cheated. But great! anyway. If you like historical detective fiction, give Goddard a go.

Excellent as always (2/4 people found this helpful)

A brilliant novel by Goddard. Very well written, brilliantly plotted and lots of twists. He could have made more of the Lincoln setting though, but apart from that this novel is a masterpiece.
