Inspirational (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is an inspiring tale of the power of faith, courage and perseverance in trying circumstances. I did not read this from the same viewpoint as many others may have done, as I don't share the same religious faith as Gladys Aylward, but this does not detract from the lessons that can be learned from her story. An interesting, thought-provoking read.

A WOMAN OF ALL WOMEN! (8/12 people found this helpful)

When I was young my mother read us the book of Gladys Alyward (among many other books of men and women who gave their life for the Lord). Of all the books she read to us this one in particular had me riveted from the start. This woman had courage and faith beyond any other person I'd ever heard about and all I could think was that I wanted to be like her someday. She was, and still is, to me an inspiration. The memories of the stories in this book have never left me and I am now 3- years old. When I have children I will certainly read this book to them because every child needs to learn of countries and cultures beyond their own. They need to learn of the faith of those who have gone on before and the amazing power of God to protect His children.

A real insight to how missionary work used to be. (16/17 people found this helpful)

My grandmother met Gladys Alyward in a Sunday Service at a Chapel in South Wales many many years ago. She told me stories Miss Alyward told that Sunday gathering and bought me this book, I was very young and remember reading it over and over again. The book got misplaced and I tried for many years to replace it to no avail. A story of sheer will power, guts and determination and this is a good and honest piece of work of a very kind hard working woman.I wrote about her for a school project once and consider Gladys Alyward to be an inspiration of courage, rightousness and pure heart and soul. I would encourage ANY youngster, boy or girl, to read this and learn about life as it was then, and compare to the way things are today. This is how courage manifested itself then and deserves, even today, to be recognised and acknowledged by all of this and further generations to come.A MUST.
