Deeply honest book (1/7 people found this helpful)

This collection of essays and speeches roughly cobbled together
with the device of using "new whatever" for every chapter heading
honestly reflects the general tenor and feel of Government policy.
Every "old problem" poverty, inequality, etc etc is given
a spin round the block and dumped out without going anywhere.
However you must admire the honesty a man who can write...
"Should we do what appears principled or what is politically expedient" (page 58)
Worth it for the photo captioned "New labour, nouvelle cuisine"

A great example of the beliefs of our Prime Minister! (2/8 people found this helpful)

New Britain, though published before the 1997 election, is an excellent testament to the man who became, despite recent crises, the most popular Prime Minister in history. It details how Tony Blair changed the Labour Party after near terminal decline and how he intends to modernise the country in the same vain. As well as politics, this book also shows you something of the man and his own, personal, beliefs, not wayed down by outdated dogma or ideology, but rather true social democratic and Christian values. New Britain acts as an early indication of the man who may well go on to dominate British politics for a generation.

A must for any student of modern politics in Great Britain (3/4 people found this helpful)

If you need to understand what motivates the Prime Minister this is the book for you. Very readable; it outlines the aspirations of the New Labour Government. It is not a book of promises, it is a book of aspirations, if the previous reviewer had read the book they would have known this. If you are after an autobiography this is not the book for you.

What we've come to expect from the PM. (6/6 people found this helpful)

This book is a good guide to pre 1997 policies of the Labour Party. It is a collection of speeches from lectures, conferences, articles and similar by Tony Blair. Although I used it in various accademic work, it is rather slimy in its content. Some of the speeches talk of nothing but cliches such as the great courage we must have, taking leaps into the future, and how we can 'make Britain young' again.

When meeting 'the real Tony', this book shows us stories of him chatting to his children about doing headers with Kevin Keegan. I had to put it down at that stage, even though he is the People's Premier.
