The character of Dan Hatch comes accross as a thoughful and responsibile 12-year old. The overall characterization and theme of this book is very didactic (teaches socially and morally accepted lessons). I would prefer that 5th or 6th graders learn more about thought provoking issues. For instance, the characters (espically Dan) avoid realistic discussions and expressing their feelings about death. I mean really, those tornados killed dozens of people. Can it be possible that Dan did not know any of those victims?

This book was exciting and it only took me 2 hours to read it because I literaly could not put it down. It made me wonder how I would react in such a dificult situaion. The first time I read it was 3 years ago and believe me, that was not the last time. I was worried for the boy and his mother a lot. The experiences were so amazing and all the people seamed very brave.

Although I found this book to be a little unrealistically writen, i thought it was very interesting and informative. The plot and character development is extramly good and probablly the book's highest point.
