Reader Reviews:Favourite Maeve Binchy novel (0/0 people found this helpful)I've read most of Maeve Binchy's books. This one is one of my favourites, in part because there's no unease halfway through the book where a couple who has been happily married suddenly grows tired of each other (which seems to happen a lot in other MB novels).
Away from Home You Still Carry Home in Your Heart (0/0 people found this helpful)Maeve Binchy did it again for me. I always take her books on holidays and I end up reading her on the beach. This time I read her instead of sightseeing in Manchester - I could not wait until the summer.
Fine if you are 10 years old (0/0 people found this helpful)Ummm... just bad. So unrealistic, stereotyped and a bit trite. Apparently this author has quite a reputation but I am sure this would never have been published had this not been the case. A bit patronising to Greek Islanders too with their simple ways. All life's problems solved by the presence of a bunch of selfish tourists. Yup, right. The nights were full of stars for me .... (0/0 people found this helpful)I thought this was a lovely book. Can't say that I have read much of Maeve Binchy's other work as it all seemed to be a little bit too similar for me. That said, this was a nice contemporary read. Shame that it is in quite a large format, as this may be off-putting to many that would pack in in their hand luggage as a quick read by the pool.
Beautiful (1/1 people found this helpful)This is the first book Ive read by the atuhor, maybe because its set in Greece (not her usual Ireland) and in present day (not in the usual 1950s). I was blown away. The beautiful story throws a bunch of strangers together at Andreas's Tavern (a man missing his son who left home 9 years ago), on a stunning Greek island one balmy Summer season. Following a tragic shipping accident, we meet all the main characters - Fiona and her violent boyfriend, Thomas (a divorced man also missing his son), Elsa who is running away from her lying ex partner, David who is trying to escape his overbearing family and Vonni, a middle aged Irish women who has lived on the island for years. Examining the issues of family and friendship, Ms Binchey creates a truly touching tale of strangers becoming friends, of people running away from their troubles and finding answers they never anticipated.
