With titles echoing the tales from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", Èapek's ten stories (there's "One More Thrown in for Good Measure") have all the trappings of traditional fairy tales with elves and anthropomorphic characters in fantastic situations. However, Èapek's own blend of satire and his taste for the absurd have created a truly remarkable series of modern parables.
