Normandy (0/0 people found this helpful)

This book explains the D-Day landings and Normandy campaign from an allied point of view. Although interesting and informative, this book deals with the forces involved at a Divisional level and higher, without explaining the average man’s experience of fighting in Normandy or the equipment and small arms he had at his disposal, which is the sort of detail I am interested in.

Good intro that works in this format (3/3 people found this helpful)

This was one of the early Osprey Campaign works that covers the very well trodden ground of the D-Day and D-Day Plus campaign in Normandy. I think the format is a success. Most other books on the subject have been too heavy on text or taken a very restricted focus on one aspect or personality. This quite nicely ties in all the different strands. I have never been able to make sense of the abortive attempts by Montgomery to capture Caen through, Bluecoat, Epsom, Goodwood etc. This book helped me understand these very well. The wargaming section, which unfortunately Osprey seems to be ditching in newer books is good and full of ideas. I think this is a very good and painless look at the whole Normandy campaign.

Concise Evaluation Of Operation Overlord (2/2 people found this helpful)

D-Day was a pivotal moment in WW2 history. Stephen Badsey succintly analyses the background and stategic limitations available to both the Allies and the Axis. Most authors on the subject do not seem to examine the possibility that D-Day could have been a spectacular failure.
Concise, very readable with good graphics and maps laid close to the relevant text. For Wargamers the section at the end offers several very good approaches to understanding the complexities of this important Military Historical event.
