Reader Reviews:There are better guides on Cyprus... (12/13 people found this helpful)We bought this book before going out there last July. We realised that the book is dated and does not list all the sites that are available. There is no mention of the beautiful secluded beaches which you can only find through asking the locals. This guide book spent all it's time in our suitcase since many of the sites and shops listed in it have either closed or changed business. It was more of a liability to consult this book because any plans we made through consulting the book were spoiled. A waste of money.. Excellent (17/20 people found this helpful)After many years of wanting to visit Northern Cyprus, we bought this book to see what the Turkish side of the country would have to offer us. We found it has all you need to know before visiting this lovely country. Northern Cyprus has so much to offer the traveller, it's history, wildlife, flora & fauna etc. The list is too long. All the historic sites are accompanied by full colour photographs. Kristina Gursoy & Lavinia Neville Smith have captured the whole beauty of the country and its people which make this book a very interesting read. Whilst there we used this book as our guide for the numerous places we visited and found it to be invaluable. Northern Cyprus is certainly as it is described, 'A corner of earth touched by heaven'. This book is a must for the future traveller. It is up to date, authorative, well illustrated and easily read. All of the important visitor attractions are here. This was the book that was widely available in the country itself. The book gives clear accurate directions to enable the reader to find places easily. Our only quibble - don't take the restaurant guide as being anything other than subjective. One of their recommendations had only us as customers one evening. Thourough guide with good graphics and pictures (13/14 people found this helpful)I have just returned from TRNC (21/10/01) where I used four guides: This one, the Bradt N Cyprus guide and the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet offerings. Of the four this was the most visual in its presentation, and the most conservative in its descriptions of accessibility (particularly by car) of some of the more out of the way sights. Together with the Bradt guide it had the advantage of being dedicated to the North of the divide. The LP and RG, however were better for listings of hotels, restaurants, etc. The Landmark guide had a less dry and wordy layout, which I found better for choosing where to go, but the Bradt, guide was the best reference once there, with good advice on how to find and tour sites like Salamis. The glossier Landmark guide is also significantly heavier than the other guides. As a general note the military presence in coastal and other resort areas has reduced significantly and the roads have improved rapidly since any of the guides were published. The other big change that I found was the widespread acceptance of credit cards (dominantly Visa, but in many cases MC too) and far more ATMs not only in the major towns but also in some resort areas.
