From such a respected academic publisher as Routledge one would have expected far better. This dictionary is clumsy, outdated and lacking in essential information for the serious (or even casual) learner of Norwegian. The most glaring ommissions are noun classes and verb transitivity. But perhaps most detrimental of all to ease of use is the layout.
No dictionary should ever use indentation for primary entries. This makes the entries hard to find and puts them in an apparent subordinate position relative to sub-entries appearing on the margin, which appear to have a higher status.
This dictionary could have been much better, but in its current form is sadly not worth the price.
Where are the genders? And what about phonetics? (7/7 people found this helpful)
I ordered the dictionary blind, thinking that the biggest dictionary possible was bound to include these things. But there just seem to be so many words missing! If you wanted to know the norwegian for Norway you won't find it here! For the price I was very disappointed, although there are various obscure nuggets to be gleaned (I could tell you what an "irrigation cooler" is in norwegian).
My mini Berlitz dictionary, which cost next-to-nothing, has phonetics included with every entry and it's invaluable. If only this book could have addressed this and the matter of genders. Ah well.....

I bought this dictionary before moving to Norway, so it wasn't until I started to learn Norwegian that I discovered the glaring omission in this book - it does not give the genders of the words. Apart from this it is a good dictionary, giving information about usage and a short section on Norwegian grammar. Oh yes, and lots of obscure terms from the oil industry. But for having such a basic fault, I couldn't give this dictionary more than one star.
