Fantasic gripping book! (0/0 people found this helpful)

I absolutely could not put this book down! my daughter and mother were also hooked. This book is an amazing insight into life in Iran in the 1980's, the way of life for women in Iran and an eye opener to the huge cultural difference between the West and this Islamic country. It is an exiting story which left me wanting to understand more about Iran and it's history and life for women there.

Very hard to put down. (1/2 people found this helpful)

This was one of those books that when I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about reading it...

It was exceptionally well written in that it was very descriptive without being overbearing. The pace moved on quite quickly throughout the book which ensured that it was captivating.

Betty and her daughter were exceptionally lucky to have escaped alive... All in all an excellent, highly recommended read.

misleading cover (6/10 people found this helpful)

A note about the cover: It's misleading and unfair to Iranians. In no part of Iran do woman wear a full niqab like that, with only the eyes visible. That's a Gulf Arab you see on the cover.

Iranians are not Arabs. Sheesh.

Good book - shows the stupidy of a woman (2/6 people found this helpful)

An excellently written book by Betty Mahmoody, it's difficult not to have sympathy for her plight, but as I read more of the book, the underlying feeling of 'stupid cow' gets stronger and stronger. The warning signs in America were obvious even to a blind person, and when she agrees to go to Iran that's when you start to think, how stupid are you? In answer very stupid, you husband has ranted against America whilst living there, and you get on a plane to the country that hates America just after a revolution, when every American citizen has told you not to, and you still go. Idiot woman.

Gripping Story (2/2 people found this helpful)

As soon as I started this book it became difficult to put it down, from the moment Betty's husband tells her she will not return to America you start to hate him, I have never felt so angry reading a book before!

Betty Mahmoody recalls how she became trapped in Iran and was forced to live as an oppressed 'Iranian' woman along with her daughter whilst her husband and his supporting family seemingly showed no concern for his daughter or her future.

From the very first plan of escape to the actual escape itself this story is a compelling read and above all else is a warning to those who may be considering a trip to a foreign country where little is known of their laws and way of life.
