It was with great anticipation I awaited this book to be delivered. When it finally arrived from Amazon, let us just say that I was a little disappointed after forking out a pretty penny for the book. The layout is brilliant, well-researched and with clear entries; even the ridiculous transliteration of Yemeni words is provided, which seems to be a common sickness in so many Arabic dictionaries and learning books, and a serious stumbling block to reading the language properly. I was, however, particularly impressed by the plethora of deeply humourous Yemeni proverbs and sayings contained in the book.
However, my main gripe was this. My wife is of Hadhrami origin and we really wanted a book that would give us some insight to the dialect of Hadhramaut in the south of Yemen. The book states clearly in the beginning that it is based on the dialect of the capital, Sanaa, and quite diverse from Hadhrami slang. The book does not provide any regional variations of words whatsoever.
So as the title is somewhat misleading, I have provided an alternative at the top. The book is a great tool, but only if you're going to Sanaa.
