A colourful account early European/Maori New Zealand life (4/4 people found this helpful)
F.E. Maning's rough and tumble account of his life during the very earliest European occupation of New Zealand, and in particular the Northland district from his eventful (near terminal) arrival to the establishment of the colonial government. His description of custom and tradition of the people he came into contact with is detailed as is his description of flawed government policies of the time (spoken even as an officer of that Government). F.E. Maning's book is a sentimental work describing a period and time now lost in the myth of the early European/Maori contact. His humour and the recollection of the none too savoury practices of the period without a 'Victorian' pretense make this book a delightful read for those interested in early New Zealand.
