Reader Reviews:Old Peter's Russian Tales (8/8 people found this helpful)I had this book as a child and loved it and my children are now enjoying it. The tales have all sorts of unusual twists and don't always have a happy ending: eg. the story of the old couple who "adopt" the Little Daughter of the Snow but then lose her again because they do not love her enough. Young children might find some of them frightening (eg. Baba Yaga the witch with her iron teeth) but the over-6s should enjoy them a lot, and appreciate the humour in them. This is a particularly good book for reading aloud - the prose style is beautiful. Old Peter's Russian Tales (11/11 people found this helpful)A charming book of traditonal stories for children between the ages of 8 and 11. Unusual setting, supposedly tales told by an old man to his grandchildren. As a class teacher I have used them for nearly forty years and they never fail to interest the listeners. Most, taking about 15 minutes to read aloud, have the "threes" structure (three sons/ three tasks/ three gifts etc.)The most favourite tale has been "The Stolen Turnips" (threes structure/humour/cross old woman getting her deserts/contented ending). A new edition is expected in September.
