To understand all is to forgive all, said Goethe. Well, reading this book did make me feel a bit more understanding of Blunkett the man, though I remain far away from Blunkett the politician (before office, anti-South Africa and very institutional Labour; in office, inflexible and a poor home Secretary; after office but still in Parliament, one of the so many and too many MP's who make thousands of pounds a week for not very much as "advisers", scribblers etc, plus the old MP salary and "expenses").
Blunkett's parents were forced by circumstances (because they thought it his best chance) to put him in a rigid blind school where parents might visit at weekends and yet not take their children out for the day. Why? Later he became a councillor in his native Sheffield and later still, MP, Cabinet member etc.
I felt that the book (written around 1999 so before his fall from office amid allegations of expenses claiming and affairs) did not really go into the ideology behind the policy behind the policies and events. He is just "Labour" whatever that means. He finds it hard even to criticize the dreadful Hatton (once a member of the "Soviet Republic of Murkyside" or what Lenin called "Left Wing Communism...and Infantile Disorder") and now a radio chat host, apparently. The North of England is very very odd.
We learn little of his real ideological structure and, likewise, little of his family. I do not demand to know about his private life but he does touch on it, but very strangely, without fulling explaining.
Not a very good book really, but I felt that the first part did cover a very sad time in a child's life.

This was an honestly written book by the author about his origins, and what made him the person he is today. Well worth a read if biography's are your cup of tea!
