The Hamster Squeaks (1/1 people found this helpful)

Like many others around the country, I was shocked to hear about Richard and the crash and during the couple of months that followed I widely took an intrest to the odd reports of his progress. What you don't read about in the papers is what goes on behind closed doors to recovering from such an event. This book which is 50% written by Richard's wife Mindy gives you an understanding of what it was like for the family on the road to recovery. It is an emotional account and it documents the high's and low's of the weeks that followed the crash and I couldn't recommend the book more highly for those who wish to take an intrest

Much more interesting than you might think. (2/3 people found this helpful)

I got this book after it being recommended to me by a "petrol head" friend. Although I am a huge Top Gear fan I had little interest in reading how Richard Hammond had a crash, had a brain injury and got better. It sounded pretty boring to me. However, after being reassured that it was actually quite interesting I thought I would give it a read.

I can honestly say that this one of the most refreshing autobiographies I have read for a long time. What makes it more interesting is that is not completely written by Richard. Almost 50% of it is written by his wife, Mindy. This give a fascinating insight into what it is like living with someone who does outrageous stunts for a living and the impact is has on Richards's whole family when one of them went very. What is also refreshing is there is not that feeling of it being written by a ghost writer. You really get the feeling it is being written by Mr and Mrs Hammond. Richards's wit shines through and his wife's story telling is genuinely moving at times.

This is a book is one that quickly becomes one that you wont want to put down until you have read it right to the end. I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting it to be extremely dull and I couldn't have been more wrong.

Inspirational (1/3 people found this helpful)

You may not like fast cars; you may not enjoy watching "Top Gear"; you may not even know or care who exactly Richard Hammond is. But you should read this book, which Richard's wife Mindy has co-written with him. You should read it, and come to understand a little more, as you do so, how amazing and complex and miraculous the human brain is. And when you've read it, not only will you smile for Richard and Mindy, but you'll realise that as ever the more we think we know, the more we realise how much we don't know. It's written in a natually flowing style, not always in full sentences; they are simply sharing with us what happened and how it all felt - in a truly remarkable story.

Compelling & fascinating, but not what i though it would be. (2/4 people found this helpful)

I will recommend this to lots of friends but not for the reasons I thought I would. I was expecting more of a traditional biography, more of an inside story on the unusual exploits of a Top Gear presenter, that would inevitably include stuff about The Crash. What I got was an insight into who Richard is from almost entirely from the perspective of the crash. CD one is about how he became a petrol head and adreniline junkie and leading up to the crash, CD 2 is Mindy's account of the immediate aftermath and the start of the road to recovery and CD 3 about how they coped from a couple of weeks on.

It is a very compelling listen, and very moving. Both he and Mindy are remarkably strong and wonderful people and you get a much deeper insight into who he is than you would from a traditional biography. It makes you laugh and cry and I'm really looking forward to him continuing his story.
