Having read and loved 'Man & Boy' by Tony Parsons I was eager to read his latest work 'One For My Baby, for those of you who also loved 'Man & Boy' be prepared to be slightly, only slightly, disappointed.
Again Parsons demonstrates his insight into the mind of a 1990's emotionally challenged man and he does so beautifully, from the first page I felt I knew Alfie (the main character) personally and his character is unrelenting. I truly wanted a good outcome for this guy.
The path of the book follows Alfie's quest for romance, albeit unsuccessfully, and his relationship with his family. It is Parsons's portrayal of Alfies heart-rending relationship with his grandmother that brings out the best of Parson's writing ability. Make sure you have the tissues at the ready!
This book is a great curl up in bead, cup of cocoa read. Be prepared to laugh aloud, ball your eyes out, and totally empathize with many of the characters!
For Parsons fans this book is a must.
