Reader Reviews:Good as far as it goes (3/3 people found this helpful)There is no denying that this is a perfectly good dictionary for the job it wants to do and for the price for which it does it. However, I think that we have to be clear on what this dictionary does do and what, more importantly, it does not. Another point to note firstly, brought up by another reviewer but I shall repeat for clarity's sake, I suppose, is that it isn't any different from the pocket version. Now my experience of Latin has been that I've studied it almost all the way through school and now for two years at university. This book was the dictionary loaned to us by my secondary school for our Latin AS and A2 courses. Up to those levels, this dictionary works more than adequately. That, for the price, is certainly worth it. However, my only warning is aimed for any members of the prospective buyers who want to study texts in Latin in great detail and particularly without a teacher. My reason for this is that 1) the diversity of meanings in a single word in Latin can be astounding and cannot be covered in a dictionary of this level, 2) for those all too often occasions where you find a word being used in a context never found elsewhere, 3) for the tackling of some difficult parts of text such as the hapax legomenon. For such a level of text based work, I would suggests Lewis' Elementary Latin Dictionary as being the minimum requirement. Too Small (3/3 people found this helpful)I have a pocket Latin Dictionary which I consider as too small, so I thought this would be a lot better being physically bigger, and I thought that there would be more words in it, but (there is always a 'but'), the content is about the same as the pocket size book, so no real advantage other than the font size being larger. The paper is quite thick too This could be seen as a con from that point of view. I have a Concise English dictionary, I would like to see the Latin dictionary more on this scale, I have never seen one like this anywhere, perhaps someone out there knows of such a book?
You can't go wrong. (0/0 people found this helpful)It's an Oxford Dictionary which should say it all. For anyone with an interest in classical languages then desk dictionaries are a must have. You won't go wrong with this book. Same as the Pocket Oxford Latin Dictionary (46/47 people found this helpful)Just a warning that this is exactly the same book as the Pocket Oxford Latin Dictionary, but in hardcover. I didn't check the ISBNs before I bought both and was misled by the cover illustration that claimed 100,000 words phrases and translations as compared with the 46,000 claimed for the Pocket dictionary in its product description. On this basis it's exactly as good as the Pocket dictionary, which is why I gave it 4 stars - haven't actually had a chance to look at it yet. The hardcover is slightly bigger dimensions, but only just and the jacket cover is identical on both. Just depends if you prefer hardcover or soft I guess.
