Trevor Hold's splendid book is well worth exploring for an insight into an otherwise under explored repertoire. This book devotes a chapter each to 20 English Song composers, ranging from well known names such as Parry, Stanford, Vaughan Williams and Finzi, to lesser known figures such as Denis Browne, Charles Orr and E.J. Moeran. The text is thoroughly researched, balancing biographical and analytical information, and is well supported my musical examples. The chapters on lesser known composers are particularly useful as a basis for study. Much useful information on the sources of the poetry, and composers' relationships with poets is also to be found here. The comprehensive bibliography and a list of principal publishers will also be invaluable to anyone wishing to pursue this music further. A book well worth exploring for all English music lovers.
