Excellent for beginners (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is the best book for starting to learn PERL. I started with this one a long time back and I make my students start with this one. You get to do useful things very quickly and more importantly, the possibilites become very apparent. It also makes a good reference for day to day procedural programming.

Advanced PERL is not touched, which I think is a good thing. So, if you are looking for things like data structures or references or object oriented PERL you will need other books. Other more advanced books will be easier to understand after you have read this one.

What it says on the tin (5/5 people found this helpful)

This is actually a reasonable textbook. But out the horrible alliteration, the naff jokes and titles, and you actually have a book that does teach you the basics of perl very quickly. The CGI elements are rather poor and if you really want a book that will teach you substantive perl go somewhere else. If you just want to hack about with a few simple scripts though, this book is fine. I quite liked it!

Should You Buy It? (1/11 people found this helpful)

well if you are desperate then OK other wise go for sams which I think is better than dummies although would be allright if you like jokes not much fundamental of the language. should you still buy It? decision is yours! personally as a webmaster i didn't like it .....

An excellent place to start (5/6 people found this helpful)

Despite having no experience in programming, I was able to grasp the fundamentals of programming in Perl very easily due to the book's excellent pace. By the time I had reached the end of the book, I had begun creating interactive web pages using Perl & CGI (which it only covers briefly). I found I had to buy a couple of other books in order to get more information on CGI & Perl though.

This book is a good place to start, nothing more, nothing less.
