5/5 stars

A rollercoaster of a read (1/1 people found this helpful)

Similar to the cricketing life of Philip Tufnell, this book is a careering, white-knuckle ride through one mistake and example of bad behaviour to another. Tufnell pulls no punches and he certainly doesn't wallow in self-pity in print (although he has many a time in his professional life). He attacks the story of his turbulent life on and off the cricket pitch with a brutal, relentless honesty of a fool who knows he is a fool and knows full well there is absolutely nothing he can/could do about it. For that reason the book is a great read. It is quite low on insights into what Tufnell thought of many of his colleagues however, as most of the invective is directed (unsurprsingly) at himself.

Tufnell's descriptions of how he dealt with the loss of his mother is very moving and the frustration he feels with one of his ex-wives is almost palpable. It times the reader feels considerable sympathy for him, even though we know he brought most of it upon himself.

A pacy, interesting read and not in the least dull.

An honest sports autobiography (6/6 people found this helpful)

Most sports books follow a similar pattern. They are pretty dull recycling of famous games. If the author has done something wrong, there's pages of self justifying nonsense.

This book is however totally different. It is ; I think ; completely honest. Tuffers tells it like it is, and if in doing so he shows himself in a bad light, then so be it.

It's also entertaining ; amusing ; and sad in places. Well worth a read.

A book I completed just twelve hours after receiving it (12/12 people found this helpful)

I ordered this book late tuesday night, it arrived friday (yesterday) morning. I was out all day watching Notts play Derbyshire so wasn't aware it had arrived. I started reading at 9.45pm and soon realised that this was a book I couldn't put down. The fact that my eyes were involuntarily shutting and I kept dropping the book convinced me to go to sleep some time after midnight. I picked up the book on waking, had a short break to eat some breakfast, forewent the prospect of watching England being hammered by Australia and sat outside with the book. I finished it at ten to one. I obviouly can't pretend to know PCRT at all but he seems like a pretty amusing bloke. I first thought this after reading and enjoying Postcards from the beach... Much of the book charts pretty unsavoury behaviour, the sort you come across and despise, but what won me over was that he doesn't make excuses. He was badly behaved before and after his mum's death. His description of his mum's death and nearly losing Lisa and Poppy caused me to hold my breath til the pages were turned. It does seem to turn out well towards the end of the book, he seems to become quite a nice bloke. It's an excellent book, filled with admirable honesty, much like Stephen Fry's autobiography. And inbetween the anger, frustration and general unpleasant behaviour it's a damn funny, detailed yarn, that you don't get in newspapers.

Tuffers tells it like it was, with plently of humour. (4/5 people found this helpful)

The only english spinner of the last ten years worthy of the name shows his talent for writing nearly matches his talent for bowling. An excellent, funny book, with an element of reflection on his mistakes of the past. Overall, a very entertaining read on one of crickets few characters

So much you thought you knew..!!!! What a great read (2/2 people found this helpful)

Bought this book ...and couldn't put it down really enjoyable. A complex life tale about a complex individual but in many ways he lived his life the way many others of us wish they could. At times you love him..hate him..feel sorry for him...puts you through alot of emotions. he holds nothing back and tells it exactly like it was should it make you despise him or not. Not in my case a great book...Well Done Phil and Peter.!
