Essential summer reading for all English sports fans (0/0 people found this helpful)

I'm not a particularly passionate cricket fan, but this insightful and well researched book left me with a new understanding about the game and why our national team will never compete consistently with the Aussies - and several other countries - without massive changes being made to our system.

The author presents some excellent points about the direction in which the game needs to go, how easy it would be for it to change (from the grass roots up) and why nothing may happen. It left me really angry about the stuffy and archaic attitude of the old brigade and about just how much control has been put in the hands of the wrong people for too long.

There are loads of ace statistics and it all makes for a surprisingly quick read. Every further England loss this summer makes the book more relevant!

Massive disappointment (1/3 people found this helpful)

Oh dear. A book that I'm sure has a clear argument within it struggles to become aparent due to the very limited writing skills of its author. It's little more than a ramble through cricket history leaving a reader that already has a high level knowledge of cricket events since the 1970s thinking "where is this going?".

Some of the points the book makes are frankly ridiculous eg. that the admission of females to the MCC was more significant for cricket than the advent of 20-20 (this is not a joke).

Excellent read (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is a fantastically well research book that shines a bright light on the structural failures of England cricket. Hopefully the authorities will take note before its too late, for the benefit of all true cricket fans.

Spot on (1/1 people found this helpful)

As a club cricketer I am often asked why our national team is so up and down; Buckland explores the reasons why professional cricket is in sad state. I have not been to an England game myself since Sydney 1995 and the reason is cost. Why are we priced out? If you want the answers, read this book. A very well researched book which could answer many of the questions, the average cricket lover asks on a regular basis. Wake up ECB, MCC and Counties, take note, PLEASE, for the silent, excluded majority.

Compelling stuff ! (1/1 people found this helpful)

At last, a Pommie who truly calls it for what it is ! Let's hope the MCC ignores every word and we continue our Ashes' dominance.
