Reader Reviews:pyongyang (0/0 people found this helpful)At first glance this book looks like an upmarket Beano or Dandy however it is a very perceptive account of a visit to North Korea. It is most likely to appeal to someone who has visited that country. To a large extent the book is a mirror image of my stay (excluding the bits about animation)The guides took me on the same trips and recited identical spiels also using the same slogans and evasions. Two points I differ with the author 1)the food was quite good and 2)the immigration officer did not even look at my powerful short wave radio which got the BBC easily.A good reminder of my stay . Abook to be recommended. Informative and Funny - a great insight into North Korea (0/0 people found this helpful)I really liked this book. It was funny and informative and gave a good insight into the unique and weird world of North Korea.
Great Debut (2/4 people found this helpful)I picked this up after a friend's recomendation and was thoroughly impressed by Guy and his North Korean journey. Worth a read. Excellent book (3/4 people found this helpful)I oredered this book out of curiosity about North Korea; out the same reason I also bought AQUARIUMS OF PYONGYANG. Guy Delisle's book is just great - I enjoyed the time reading it - it gets you from the first pages. One does not get to know many details about functioning of North Korean society, as most of it was apparently banned to the author, it is rather an account (sometimes very funny, sometimes ironic) how a Westerner perceives the country confronting his values and way of life with a different approach and reality. The form of a graphic novel was also excellent choice - pictures are superb. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone. a jaw droppingly good insight into North Korea (7/12 people found this helpful)Want to learn more about this regime? Keen to know why we SHOULD all be wetting our pants because this lot are nuclear? This graphic novel elegantly and beautifully illustrates the status quo in North Korea and is a penetrating insight into this regime.
