Editorial Review:

Observer columnist Nigel Slater has chosen his eight favourite foods and sculpted a sensational cookbook around them. And what are they? Potatoes, chicken, sausages, garlic, bread, cheese, ice-cream and chocolate.

For each of the eight he offers a selection of recipes, some from friends and colleagues, including Alastair Little, Rowley Leigh, Peter Gordon and Nigella Lawson. As he explains in the introduction, "By Real Food I mean big-flavoured, unpretentious cooking. Good ingredients made into something worth eating. Nothing fancy. Nothing extravagant. Nothing careless or slapdash. Just nice, uncomplicated food--be it chicken roasted with olive oil, lemon and basil or simply a big, fat mushroom baked in garlic butter and stuffed inside a soft bap." And that's pretty much what he's achieved, though he does let himself go on occasion with recipes like Deep-fried Ice Cream and Mincemeat Parcels.

The book is peppered with short essays on ingredients that bear Slater's trademark dry wit. He is definitely one of Britain's best food writers and his collaboration with photographer Jonathan Lovekin marks this book out from the crowd.

Inspiring quick ideas (0/0 people found this helpful)

Once again Nigel Slater has hit that must-try-this, mouthwatering foodie spot, with his indulgent, relaxed approach to cooking and eating.
The recipes are organised around eight basic main ingredients (such as potatoes, chicken, garlic, sausages) which he finds delicious and comforting. I agree with his choices. The recipes are generally pretty easy, sometimes with suggestions for several approaches to,say, roasting a chicken - one of the slower methods - down to preparing the ultimate fried chicken sandwich with the leftovers. Another very easy one is a slight reinvention of the nostalgic toad-in-the-hole. A beginner could do a lot worse than starting off with this, without having to plough through tricky techniques.
As ever,he emphasises that using only the best quality stuff will achieve gastronomic delight, especially with relatively simple ingredients. This is a simple, homely approach to making delicious food.

When food writing is more important than eating (0/14 people found this helpful)

Nigel Slater's writing makes for an enjoyable five minutes read before you have to go and find a cookery book with some decent recipes. Like his newspaper column and autobiograpy his camp and slightly acerbic style cannot fail to entertain and to be honest the recipes sort of get in the way. As a cookbook "Real Food" is a bit of a joke, one that I am sure is not lost on Mr Slater and his publisher.

I bought this book for a friend in the USA through Woody's UK and found Woody's customer service to be very very good indeed. The book was delivered as promised and my friend is delighted with the contents.

Not only are there a bunch of great recipes in this, the way it's been written makes it real joy to read to. It really gets your mouth watering!! These are recipes to use everyday! Not like recipes from those posh cook books you buy and hardely use. There's not a recipe in this book that I don't like!!
