Reader Reviews:Good starter pack (1/2 people found this helpful)I bought this book mostly becuase I wanted to get hold of a Linux distributable on CD, as it goes it offers allot more than the three CD's with Fedora on it! I'd say its a good introductory book with plenty of information etc, its spread out a bit though so (like me) you might find your self flicking about trying to find that gem you saw last week. I'd say you'll need a more indepth book once your up and running and bear in mind that Fedora Core 2 is released now and the CD's with this book contain Fedora Core 1. Not a problem for me as FC1 seems excellent and I'm still playing around / learning. Don't believe the Linux hype- stick with XP (4/56 people found this helpful)I was attracted to Linux as I had heard how reliable and fast it was. Linux seemed a good alternative to windows, which I have found quite unreliable and frustrating in the past. I was initially quite impressed with how the Linux system loaded in, however after some usage I found it to be slower and the rational behind it far inferior to the latest Windows XP. If you enjoy spending hours tinkering with computers then why not spend some time messing around with Linux: Running windows applications on it is more difficult than I thought, and the Bible has not done a good job succinctly telling you how to do it. Also I have encountered problems such as connecting to the internet, the Bible does not have enough troubleshooting to solve problems such as these. I run both systems on my machine and XP definitely wins hands down. It is faster, more intelligent (at configuring itself), and Microsoft packages such as Explorer, Office etc. are much better than any Linux equivalents. The perfect introduction (8/12 people found this helpful)If you want to try out Linux (the worlds best operating system) but know nothing about it, then this book is the perfect place to start. It even includes the three disks needed, brilliant! I am not new to linux, but still found some useful and interesting tips and information i this book. There are loads of tools designed to make your life easier and this book mentions alot of them. Want to move away from teh evil empire of microsoft and try linux, then start with this book! You Will Be Up & Running In No Time (16/18 people found this helpful)I searched long and hard for a book to get me started using Linux. This looked easy to follow and, more importantly, not too hard to read. Ideal for quite advanced Windows users taking their first steps in Linux. Moves at a pace that may frighten those who don't like to get their hands dirty under the bonnet, but then they probably aren't queuing up to try Linux.
