Editorial Review:Part of the motive of serial killers is simply to prove that they are better--better than their victims and better than the police investigating them. Mastermind, the villain of James Patterson's new thriller Roses are Red, goes one better--he does not even have to do all his own killings, simply manipulate the bank robbers he gathers for progressively more vicious hostage takings into ever more bloody massacres. Psychologist-investigator Alex is already coping with the aftermath of a previous case--the woman he loves has been so badly traumatised by the killer who abducted her for months that she does not want to be near him or their child; and now he finds himself dealing with a case where completely arbitrary decisions about who lives and who dies are the order of the day. Mastermind is ahead of the game each step of the way--this is a novel about the pain of betrayal as well as the pain of responsibility; Alex is a flawed, clever man driven near to breaking point by the knowledge that, if he guesses things wrong, people will die, and that they may die anyway just to spite him. --Roz Kaveney Reader Reviews:Enjoyable but not a page turner (0/0 people found this helpful)This was the first James Patterson book I have read. I enjoyed the book and liked the main characters, I also liked the short chapters, however i was disappointed with the ending, thought there was no explanation, it didnt make sense and it was too quick - left me feeling quite angry and robbed! I see there is a sequel to Roses Are Red - not sure yet if i shall bother reading it. Not one of his best (0/1 people found this helpful)The book was a good read, although a bit boring at times when the mastermind was mentioned over and over again. Other wise the story was very good until it got to the ending as the person who did the murders was only mentioned by real name at the very begining so I had no idea who did the set up until the end, which is good in one way but notin another. i will not be put off the authors books as other ones i have read have been good like judge and jury. Overall a compelling read (2/2 people found this helpful)This I have to admit is my first in the Alex Cross series, although I have read other books by Patterson.
Another Brilliant book (1/1 people found this helpful)This is another Alex Cross book and a fantastic read although in my opinion not as good as Along came the Spider and Kiss the Girls and the all the others that came before this. The twist at the end was good and I dont think it spoils the next book violets are blue although you should definately read this one first to understand about the mastermind before going on to violets are blue. Roses are Red (0/0 people found this helpful)Enjoyable but not especially memorable. Plenty of continuity for those who have been reading the Alex Cross novels. Newcomers may be confused. I also have to address something a previous reviewer says about not reading the last couple of pages as it will spoil the next book 'Violets Are Blue'. Having read both novels, I personally did not feel the twist spoiled the book and if the twist is so detrimental to 'Violets Are Blue' why would the author put it in. As far as 'Roses Are Red' is concerned, the twist is effective (though a little OTT)and is worth reading the whole book for.
