5/5 stars

Another fine work on minor axis airforces aces (5/5 people found this helpful)

We all know that Romania was until late 1944 one of the most
loyal allies of the Third Reich, and we all know that they in turn changed sides when facing defeat, but we must see the war as a global huge conflict without looking into the pre-conceived idea of nazism comunism and see the men that fought in it , their machines and their accomplishments.

Rumanian aces were few, by german standards, but true aces if we use the allied standards. Rumania was equipped with some home made IAR fighters, and received during the war some other material captured by germany in france, namely Dewoitines d.520 and Moranes 460, but it was only when they start to receive the german made fighters, initially 2nd hand Bf 109's that the Rumanian aces begun to reveal themselves.

Rumania was to be build 109's during the 2nd half of the war (as did hungary)and despite a majority of the production being delivered to the luftwaffe, the numbers kept for rumania were more than enough to keep atrition and give the aces a regular supply of machines, to face until mid 1944 the growing american air raids on Ploesti oil fields, and to engage the soviets coming from the east, albeit both were hopeless attempts to avoid the inevitable.

Losses were eventually high, but as it was happening with the germans, aces also were revealed with the reductin of victory odds. Kills begun to grow as fighters available diminished, and by the time Rumania swift sides a number of aces was created.

But swifting sides also implied the rumanains now facing the superior german experten and many of the pre.armistice aces were simply no match to the Experten and many dies in the remaining months of WW2. The survivors are true exceptional aces that fought with and against germany, winning kills with and against, and that in the final it would take over 50 years to be remembered in another fine OSPREY AIRCRAFT OF TEH ACES series.
