Geddit (2/2 people found this helpful)

Utter rapture.

This collection of short stories by writers famous (Pushkin, Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Chekhov, Bulgakov etc) and not (Bunin, Kharms, Teffi, Leskov etc) is absorbingly delightful with a thematic range from the macabre and the mysterious to philosophy and gulag politics. The stories bristle with the wit and irony characteristic of soviet and russian writers. Top quality from dash to finish.

Get it and read it.

Great introduction into Russian literature (1/1 people found this helpful)

I have read a lot of English literature and wanted to try something different, so after initially having my interest in Russian literature whetted by Anton Chekhov's The Shooting Party, I wanted to read as many Russian authors as i could, and i found this book. It's got about 40 short stories in it from a huge range of different writers, so if one story doesn't float your boat, there's plenty of others to read!
It's much easier to read than I anticipated and I found the extra notes at the back helpful. It's also something which will impress other commuters if you read it on the bus!

what a collection (7/8 people found this helpful)

This collection of russian short stories is amazing. I love the introductions to every author which help to understand the times the stories were written in so much better. This book gives you the chance to read many newly discovered stories translated into English for the first time. The translations are superb. Buy it and read it.

An Excellent Introduction to Russian literature (17/18 people found this helpful)

This book is ideal for anyone interested in the genre of Russian literature but unsure as of where to begin. Containing short stories from a wide variety of authors, including Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Solzhenitsyn and Bulgakov, this book offers a varied but always intriguing selection of Soviet literature, as the title suggests, from "Pushkin (early 19th century) to Buida (1954.)
Fans of Russian literature will not fail to be entertained by the shorter works of some of Russia's best-known authors. The collection's diversity is a result of the differing styles and opinions of the authors. You will find humour and tragedy, mystery and suspense. The ultimate page turner! Highly recommended, no previous knowledge of Russian literature is necessary to enjoy this read.
