A good book (1/1 people found this helpful)

I don't normally read clive Cussler, but I found this a very entertaining story, even if it does stretch reality sometimes. I would recommend this book.

By the way, if you have seen the movie and didn't like it, don't be put off. The movie is garbage, but the book is good. In this case the book is far better than the film.

Maybe two-and-a-half on a good day! (1/3 people found this helpful)

I've read several of Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt books. Inca Gold was thrilling, well crafted and entertaining. Trojan Odyssey was silly but equally entertaining. Sahara was.... well, it wasn't.
It all started out quite well. The premise seemed a good one, the guest stars (e.g. Eva Rojas) seemed interesting. I was quite enjoying it.
Sadly it didn't last. Of course, Dirk and Al are infamous for their ability to escape from apparently certain death, but the number of times they succeed 'against all odds' in this book is bordering on ridiculous. There are many intertwining plots and subplots, so many that it becomes impossible to keep up with them all, and the frequent brief sojourns to Washington to catch up with Admiral Sandecker and co. just interrupt the flow of the story.
Everyone likes a good plot twist, but this novel has far too many. I couldn't start to get excited about a set piece because the next thing I knew, the action had moved, someone else had tried to kill Dirk and failed, and they were off on another unlikely journey.
There has been quite a bit of controversy about the changes the recent film made to the plot. I actually think that the changes vastly improved the work - from an overlong, winding, messy saga to an exciting action-adventure.
A serious misfire from Mr. Cussler.

Loved it, and I'm a Clancy fan (1/2 people found this helpful)

The action and story line go hand in hand as it takes you on a tremendous rush; makes you feel like you are right there with Pitt ! One of my all time favourites......if you like the action adventure genre... read it... youll be comparing others to it !

Excellent book - one of Cussler's best... (6/8 people found this helpful)

This really is one of Clive Cussler's greatest achievements. It is sad that the recently released feature film removes all the dark elements of the story and heads for straight all out action-adventure. As with all of Cussler's books there is a great blending of fictional history into real-life. Some of Cussler's ideas can be a little outlandish and Sahara is certainly no history book, but the story rushes past in such an accomplished manner that everything feels in place. It is the believable evilness of the villains in this story and the portrayal of diseased and enslaved which really hit home and make the difference when compared with newer titles like Trojan Odyssey or Valhalla Rising.

In my opinion, Sahara, Dragon and Raise the Titanic are Cussler's finest moments and it is sad two of these have now been ruined by film productions. The producers of the film have removed 90% of what made the book stand out. If you were going to see the film, spend your money on the book instead - you won't be disappointed.
