Reader Reviews:Can't recommend this book enough! (0/0 people found this helpful)If, like me, you're computer and web literate but just can't quite get your head round Flash, this is the book for you. Some people here have found the pace too slow for them but I have to say for me it's perfect.
Good Solid book (5/6 people found this helpful)good explnations on flash teaches you all the basic i would recommend this book for any one trying to learn flash However This books actionscript is for flash mx not flash mx 2004 so the actionscript is totaly usless. Great book! (4/4 people found this helpful)Sam's Teach yourself Flash Mx 2004 in 24 hours is probably one of the best tutor books I have ever bought. You never have a boring moment learning how to use flash with this book as you constantly put your new found abilities to the test with tasks that are thoroughly explained so you know what you have achieved. At the end of most chapters there is an exercise where you are on your own to be creative and put what you have learned into practise, (if you are learning flash for a job then these tasks are useful). Overall the book is an excellent buy and you are using flash fluently within minutes of reading. slow going! (15/17 people found this helpful)I am only on "hour" 2 - which is in inverted commas for a reason and already, I am losing the will to carry on. To say it was wordy would be the understatement of the century... I am sure I will learn something from the book, but so far, we have had 3 pages on how to zoom in and out, pages on how to type and edit text(?!?!) and a number of other mind numbingly boring tasks, all backed up with a list of why you should do everything. I think it is safe to say, if you are trying to learn Flash, you are going to already have a pretty good grasp of either a graphics package or some sort of web design skills - but more likely both! As such, 90% of the detail is unnecessary (and would be even if by some freak occurrence, someone was trying to design a Flash website without being able to type and edit text)! Some people might like wordy books and if you do, then you're in heaven with this one. But personally, I have a shorter attention span, which is being tested to the limit. I have already self taught myself Dreamweaver, 3D Studio Max, Fireworks, a degree of HTML and Photoshop and Illustrator. I prefer a "do this, click this, you get this" sort of approach, so if anyone has any recommendations, I would really appreciate it, both for Flash and also for advanced 3D Max. Hope that helps and I know it is a bit harsh, but I don't really have much time to read a novel, I just want to learn how to do it! Clear... Concise... The Ultimate Flash starting block! (6/7 people found this helpful)Its very easy to go wrong in Flash, As a user of Adobe Premiere and Photoshop I thought I could simply pick up Flash and go... Very quickly you realise thats not the case. What you need is book that clearly tells you where to begin, how fast to go and where you're going wrong. Phillip Kermans book is the best example of this, The pace of the book is perfect. Its all about hands on practise. It has a 'teacher on your shoulders' feel about it which makes this book something more than just a Flash manual. Yes... Its the basics of Flash, but if you dont get the basics right, you usually end up in a right mess! This book plugs the basics and more so deep into your brain that after reading it you'll be more than ready too tackle the advanced features that Flash offers.
