Reader Reviews:You really can't go wrong! (2/2 people found this helpful)I can honestly say, this book got me through my A Level. It's a great overview of all the main themes of Birdsong and an excellent starting point. The format is easy to follow and Pat offers a very thorough analysis of the book. I was lucky enough to attend a lecture on Birdsong by Pat herself and it was very insightful. She is now one of my university lecturers and I could not recommend her criticisms more! Pat Wheeler's Readers Guide to Birdsong (28/28 people found this helpful)I found this guide very interesting. Pat Wheeler takes a critical look at Faulks's bestselling novel and provides an honest, critical and informed reading. There are some extremely interesting debates on the representation of masculinity and soldiers during the First World War, together with a look at myth and superstition and class politics in the trenches. Wheeler makes good use of the novel and provides plenty of examples from the novel. It is written clearly and I would think it is accessible for all ages and all levels of ability. This will be a good source for anyone studying the novel . Although Wheeler puts a lot of emphasis on the war sections, she also examines the opening and closing sections of the novel. There are also good sections on the novel's reception and a list of challenging questions at the end. Recommended.
