Reader Reviews:Childish Pap (1/4 people found this helpful)I've never read anything by Clive Cussler before, and on the basis of this book, I don't think I'll be reading any more by him. The storyline is exaggerated and the characters too one dimensional and "perfect". This works in a Bond film because of the tongue in cheek attitude, but Cussler takes it all too seriously. There is too much good adventure fiction around to bother with rubbish like this. Introducing a new Cussler Hero!!! (1/1 people found this helpful)Introducing a new Cussler hero Kurt Austin in what I hope is the start of a new series of books as enjoyable as his Dirk Pit era though I hope he doesn't kill Pitt and Giordino off. I was glad to see that Cussler allowed Pitt and Austin to meet, albeit in a lift, could they team up some time?? who knows!! An enjoyable read and a good start for new comers to Cussler, maybe it will inspire them to read the older books, or just to continue with this new series. Well, it's not Pitt! (6/7 people found this helpful)I was rather disappointed in this book, since it reminds me of Cussler's early Pitt stories. Meaning it's like watching an old Bond movie if you like the new ones... But the book is alright though not quite up to the standards of, say, the last five Pitt novels. Brilliant ! (3/3 people found this helpful)'Serpent' by Clive Cussler was a brilliant book and an enjoyable read. I think that the book could be enjoyed by both teenagers and adults. If you have read any of the other books Clive Cussler has written you will realise that this book begins with a new character and a new series. This is a good place to start reading Clive Cusslers books because you do not need to be familiar with any of the characters in his previous books. The books are similar to his earlier books apart from the fact that there are new characters. This book is about a man called Kurt Austin who is a member of NUMA, National Underwater Marine Agency, who, after saving a ladies life, discovers that someone, somewhere is trying to force American states to fight against each other and make himself dictator of the USA. As the mystery unfolds Kurt Austin discovers that there is an old Spanish organization who is trying to destroy and evidence of Pre-Columbian relations. I think that you should definitely buy this book and if you find it an interesting read you should also think about buying some of the other books in his earlier series. Better than I expected, but typical Cussler (2/2 people found this helpful)I bought this book expecting to find that Kurt Austin would be Dirk Pitt by a different name. Superficially this is true, they share many similarities, but they are also sufficiently different for it not to spoil the book. The story line, action and plot are typical Cussler making an unbelievable concept quite possible by the end of the book. The only criticism I'd make about the book is that the "baddies" are a huge corporation that seem to be able to get away with their crimes without being noticed. Until Kurt is on the case that is. This criticism is shared with Atlanits Found, which follows a similar trend, quite noticable if you read them back to back. But don't let that spoil either book as they are both good.
