5/5 stars

A must-read for all Edinburgh residents (3/3 people found this helpful)

Coming over from Germany to Edinburgh in the year 2000 I spent the best part of 5 years living in traditional tenement flats in the City of Edinburgh. Having the experience of actually living in these flats myself, the accounts in the book really came to life. What is seen today as charming flats with high ceilings, fireplaces and period features to me now has a rich history and every block seems to be telling a silent story to me when I walk by.

The book looks at all angles of domestic live of families and touches on a lot of sensitive issues like domestic abuse and poverty. Still, it will not upset you, but you will feel real admiration for those women who could make anything out of nothing.

Once you've finished reading this brilliant collection of memories of real people you will be grateful for all modern conveniences, the NHS and, as a woman, for the independence that has been achieved for our gender in the last century. Enjoy it!

A Closeness We Rarely See Today (18/18 people found this helpful)

A book which arouses a touch of nostalgia for a time when our ancestors pulled together during the good and bad times ... a time when even the smallest things in life was greatly appreciated by many.

Its quite amazing how so many families managed to survive on so few resources in the tenements througout the early part of the century leaving I'm sure many readers of the present day feeling very fortunate indeed. A real eye-opener!!

A warm recommended read, paricularly for anyone living in either of these areas with a curiosity of their past.
