Long winded yarn (0/0 people found this helpful)

Shock Wave's plot is fresh, however the ongoing torture that Pitt endures through the book is somewhat over the top. In the past Pitt has been through some pretty gruelling experiences and in Shock Wave Pitt faces his toughest challenges yet. Cussler tends to stretch the scenes out, creating a heavy going action novel, with the required cliffhangers peppered throughout. The good news is that the villains of the piece are nefarious and loathsome - just right. Overall, Shock Wave isn't the easiest Dirk Pitt adventure to read, however it will keep you going until the end.

Typical Dirk Pitt adventue (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is a typical Clive Cussler novel, evil multi megalomaniac billionaire plotting a monopoly and at the same time threatening to cause untold mayhem and human catastrophe. Enter the hero Dirk Pitt to save the day - or will he? I have to say though despite it all I do enjoy reading Cussler's books as they are always well written with a smattering of historical reference and keep you gripped to the very end. It's always interesting to read how Dirk, Al and all the usual characters plus any new lady's Dirk has befriended get into almost impossible situations and seem to ingeniously get out of them.

This book was not as far fetched as some of Cussler's books Valhalla Rising immediately coming to mind and is a pretty decent action adventure read. If like me you enjoy Cussler's books and Dirk Pitt, you will enjoy this one too.

Shock Wave (1/1 people found this helpful)

I only started to read Clive Cussler in May this year(2009) whilst on holiday.I could not put the first book down. Fortunately, another book turned up on the free Bookshelf and I finished that as soon as I returned home. I found Shock Wave enthralling - really good read, full of adventure, humour, intrigue and action and much more. The book move from one scene of the action to another - you are never bored!! I enjoyed these books so much that I went out and bought 5 more books from Amazon. I have read 4 books so far and they are fabulous. I am a new convert to Mr. Cussler and can really recommend all his books to date. An awesome writer.

One of the best Dirk Pitt Novels (0/0 people found this helpful)

One of the best, I had to say it again.
Dirk goes through every hell with his long time sidekick Al. Cussler's development of his characters is taken to the max. He is even saved from a burning boat by his companion, and basically goes through every emotion possible.
If you're a fan of Clive Cussler this is a must read.
If you have read a few Pitt novels in the past and are looking for a good read, this is a must read.
If you are new to the world of Dirk Pitt, This is a must read.
Awesome book with an awesome finish!

Great fantasy action, well researched and well written (7/7 people found this helpful)

I have never been a big fan of action thrillers. The only author I read regularly in this genre is Lee Child and his `Jack Reacher` character, and I enjoy him a lot, so I decided to give Clive Cussler a try. I am happy to say I was not disappointed! Even though "Pacific Vortex" was the first published book in the Dirk Pitt adventures series, it was the first Cussler wrote, so logically, this is the novel I picked to start my journey. I found an interesting character that lives at the edge and is passionate about his work. Also in some aspects he is similar to James Bond, women mainly, and the mix is sufficient to keep the reader thoroughly entertained. If you enjoy serial characters then this is a must series for you, also try Michael Connelly`s `Harry Bosh` series, or much more violent is the `Soft Target` thrillers by Conrad Jones. In the Dirk pitt stories Cussler has created a very entertaining series, with a character that has an arrogant and pedantic side, but whom also shows his pure emotions and is true to his friends and ideals. This makes the Special Project Director of the National Underwater and Marine Agency a very likable character. This is a book that a reader can breeze through in a few hours making it an enjoyable way to spend a weekend's afternoon. I will surely read the next book in this series hoping for a similar experience.
