Reader Reviews:False advertising? (5/6 people found this helpful)Assessing an anthology is always difficult since it is very rarely that anyone would like all the stories equally but my problem with this anthology isn't that. The cover says that these are stories of "romance and suspense" or it may be vice versa and I naively assumed that all the stories would therefore contain both romance and suspense. I was wrong. In a way, it didn't matter for me as I had ordered it only because I felt like reading something seasonal and I ended up quite enjoying all the stories. If I had expected them to be crackling with both romance and suspense, I would have been bitterly disappointed. They vary from sheer whimsy (with no real mystery) to fairly gritty but the only thing they have in common is a Christmas setting. If, like me, your only criterion for choosing this book was because it promised to be Christmassy, then go ahead but don't expect the combination of stories to be at all cogent. Worth it! (1/9 people found this helpful)This anthology contains three excellent stories. "Midnight In Death", though, was extremely dry and confusing. My favorite was "A Berry Merry Christmas" Bravo JD Robb! (21/21 people found this helpful)MIDNIGHT IN DEATH was execllent and packed a lot of adventure into a few pages. This was the best story in the book (and the reason I bought it in the first place)... I will re-read it as is my habit when I re-read all the JD Robb books when her next one comes out. As for the other three stories: I liked THE UNEXPECTED GIFT and CHRISTMAS PROMISES enough that I will probably re-read them next Christmas when I'm in a mushy mood. A BERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS was a nice fluff piece, but I probably won't re-read it. The five-star rating is based on the JD Robb section alone. THE UNEXPECTED GIFT **** CHRISTMAS PROMISES ***1/2 A BERRY MERRY CHRISTMAS *1/2 Only Eve & Roarke's story is worth the while... (10/10 people found this helpful)I would've gladly paid the cover price of the book even if it only had the Midnight in Death story. JD Robb is excellent as usual, in sharp contrast with the other 3 stories, which are not worth much. Love following Eve & Roarke's adventures? GET THIS BOOK ! (12/12 people found this helpful)Enjoy the deep, rich lives of Lt. Eve Dallas and Roarke. When last seen, Eve and Roarke were on the cusp of celebrating their first Christmas together. The spector of an escaped criminal casts a large shadow upon Eve. As expected, Roarke is not far behind the investigation . . . along with all of the other characters from the "Death" series. This book delivers. You'll find yourself wishing it wasn't a short story !
