Level of mistakes and typoes not acceptable (0/0 people found this helpful)
I'm going to give a small slap on the wrist to this book. For a 130 page book of this price, largely composed of empty squares for you to repeat the characters, the number of mistakes is not acceptable.
Page 9 quotes the character xiao for a principle of stroke order. Go to page 47 and see xiao and their instructions break this stroke order.
page 40 ying the paradigm at the top has a different form to the one you are trained to write.
Likewise for jin on page 91.
For a small book, costing this sort of money, this level of carelessness is insulting, quite frankly and leads one to think that the publishers don't really care...
On another level, for each character they give you some compounds, but if you are not going to write these out, how are you really going to learn them? although they mention these 500 words and phrases containing the basic characters on the back cover, don't think you're going to learn them.
Also, it is doubtful you will learn a character just by repeating the strokes, some sort of explanation of its component parts (as given in Tuttle's own book of 2000 characters) makes it more likely you will remember it.
That said, I have worked my way through it and created my own index cards and have more or less acquired a passive knowledge of the 100 characters so the book is not a total dud.
Takes the mystery out of a complex language (2/3 people found this helpful)
I am learning spoken Chinese. My teacher took the mystery out of speaking the language and this book takes the mystery out of writing Chinese.
The only barriers I see to learning the language are fear and ignorance. This book breaks down the barriers to a beautiful and vital world language to foreigners like me.
